We started by learning and describing some new feeling words to use throughout the week. We focused on happy, excited, scared (frightened), shy, tired, and angry (frustrated). We practiced making faces for each feeling and I even managed to snap a few classic pictures! On Wednesday we read a great story about a little girl who gets really angry and has a special way to calm herself down. We talked about what helps us calm down when we are angry and then did some awesome finger painting showing the difference between angry and happy. These turned out to be very cool… although I did have to clean up some splattered paint from some very ANGRY and enthusiastic fingers!
Friday we continued the fun by adding some interpretive dance to our song of the week, If You’re Happy and You Know It. We danced around the classroom illustrating all the different emotions in our song and laughing a lot too! We also read a silly book, How Are You Peeling by Joost Elffers. It had the greatest illustrations all made from fruits and vegetables. So silly! Starting this Friday I will have little take home packs available to you with some of the stories and theme activities in them that we have been focusing on so far. If you would like to take one home for the weekend and return it when you are finished it is a great way to extend what we have been learning to your own home!
I almost forgot to mention the huge bug hunt in our class on Friday! I found an insect net on sale for a dollar and thought it looked like fun. Well it was one of the first things spotted on Friday morning and the search was on for some bugs. I was going to save them for our bug unit later this year... but some times you just have to go with the flow!
Coming up this week we will be finishing our All About Me unit by focusing on our family and friends and the letter Ff! Please have your child bring a picture of their family to share with the class this week. We will have a great Labor Day break from school and then start our brand new theme… A World of Colors!
